Aim

Data, especially linguistic data, are not simply given. The particular structure is pretty much pre-determined by the theoretical perspective by which it is seen. The present project starts from the central hypothesis that the current discussion about differences in leading paradigms of linguistic theories suppresses the functions of the underlying sorts of data types and ignores the issue of data structures by restricting itself to contrasting characteristic formal models (generation, unification, constraint satisfaction). We intend to investigate the mathematical, theory of science related, and practical problems that arise out of a methodologically sound treatment of the notion of a datum.
